What I've Seen Recently: Late April - Late October, 2024
hello! to be honest i haven't really been consuming a lot of new stuff recently, or anything i feel super motivated to talk about (i will occasionally make a funny little tweet about the anime lain and i are watching but if i'm talking it out with her i don't feel the need to post TM) but i guess these don't have to be gigantic 1000 word salad brain dumps sometimes.

- so uh lain bought me stardew valley for my birthday.........
honestly i don't really know what to talk about because i am the last gamer on planet earth to play stardew valley. i did say i would talk about literally everything i have consumed though. i can't even be like "something funny happened in my mod" because i'm playing vanilla right now lmao. it's interesting because i NEVER liked harvest moon as a child but it's been way easier to get into stardew... to be 100% honest i think the community center bundles helped a lot with concrete goals and i got lucky from trash cans early on so i got a big boost up in completing a few of them earlyish, otherwise i might've balked at it.
idk where i am game wise, early year 3 -- midgame? i've made it to about level 35ish in the skull cavern, i got married (harvey my beloved) but no kids -- oh i recently caught all legendary fish thank god. the spring one was a massive pain in the ass, glad that's over.
my farm is still a disaster though and it bugs me because it's an ugly jungle with more trees popping up all the fucking time. but i also don't wanna cut all the trees down because like what if i need more wood... <- has 6 stacks of 999 wood rotting in chests (THAT ISN'T ENOUGH WOOD)...

- no one can find this "creepy dinosaur" game... was an excellent video! i highly recommend you watch it before you read my thoughts on it!
i watch a lot of these sorta throwaway video essay style videos, they're good airspace and brainspace filler so when i was recommended it randomly i walked into it with a similar mindset. it helps that the other videos on this guys channel are from what little poking around i've done exactly what i described in the previous sentence, so i was completely fooled, and even when the endcard revealed it was an unfiction project i actually scrolled down to the patreon credits and sources to make sure.
presenting it as a full on White Guy Talks At You style video essay was an incredibly unique angle to take with the genre of I Found A Spooky Video Game creepypastas, one i don't think i've ever seen before. i mean spooky video game creepypastas are a dime a dozen, and even ones with supplemental video created by the uploader aren't really new anymore, but this specific angle, of a monologue about an old ass game with some live action cut-ins, with this editing style, was entirely new and interesting and added another layer to the experience. perhaps it wouldn't have the same impact if you don't watch tons of these (some of them... very bad!) but i was impressed!
the gameplay he provides is also authentic-seeming enough, and low res enough, to pass for a mid 90's computer game... sorta? like, the dinosaur kills were all very repetitive but if you have a small budget and like 2 guys working on it you'd probably use the same animation over and over, right? to be honest, i don't have a lot of memories of these kinds of games, so i'm spitballing here. i was primarily a handheld gamer when i was very young. the computer was the domain of my father, and although i did watch him play diablo ii for hours upon hours, the PC discs i favored playing were what i can only describe as Licensed Slop. my old-net trauma is jumpscares and edgy 4chan posts, not games. your mileage may vary as to how realistic this is!
there was only one major complaint i have about the story, and that was the addition of the bigfoot guy was unnecessary. the themes previously touched on and alluded to in the video -- of entropy and everything fading away no matter how hard you try to cling to it -- are enough on their own, in my opinion, plus aside from the starting redditor character there's no mention of mr. bigfeet anywhere else in the overarching story. kinda felt like the author was afraid it wouldn't be memorable without a slenderman style character.
i sincerely liked it though, and would highly recommend watching it. if you're looking for a short horror project that's only as long as an episode of television, check it out!
