What I've Seen Recently: Mid November, 2022
nyallo everybody. i mentioned this on twitter a while ago but i sort of miss long form blogging about things i like? since the collapse of it is imminent i might as well brush the rest off myself and actually talk about the things i enjoy. i still will use my tumblr just for posting art and stuff and twitter for shitposting or even just one off thoughts or long threads or something that i might repost here BASICALLY NOTHING CHANGES EXCEPT I FEEL A LITTLE BETTER RECOMMENDING STUFF TO THE VOID OKAY OKAY. also remember i have terrible taste so buyers beware!
if there's no content warning attached in the through links i'll try to remember to give ones if they require it but no prommy. highlight black boxes for spoodles
manga and anime
i read the manga beloved paintings recently and quite liked it! it's a f/f anthology comic based around classical art. i don't know much about classics, but i really enjoyed seeing the author's contemporary reinterpretations of them in a manga style, and you could tell she was very passionate about art both from her end notes and how she chose to reinterpret the paintings themselves. my favorite chapters were probably 7 (la japonaise) and 14 (two lovers walking in the snow). la japonaise was a very cute childhood friends to lovers story, i like long distance couples reunited after a long time and hanna was charming. and two lovers walking in the snow featured a very sweet, fire and ice couple who contrasted each other well.
oddly enough i read this because i saw it in d-s's yan tag but i didn't like the yandere chapter too much lol. wasn't bad, yandere idol manager is good food, but i found the object of her affection kinda unlikable. in general i was disappointed by the horror or more darker chapters. 8 (madonna) featured a twist i found really unpleasant, and the character who the painting was based on this chapter didn't really fit the madonna painting/archetype imo? and 13 (girl holding a cat) had a really awkward pivot into more direct, violent horror i felt was out of place. a moving doll is already spooky! you don't need to have her eat her head off! the painting didn't feel well integrated either.
oh! i gave a solo recommendation of this manga to perch back when the season was appropriately spooky, but i've been really loving the hundred ghost stories that lead to my death! it's another anthology (i like anthologies okay) of horror stories with an overarching framing device of a boy telling them to us... and we're the spooky ghost! cw: obviously the stories have a lot of fucked up shit and i can't come up with a warning for them all off the top of my head, but the framing device comes with a warning for child abuse.
i like a lot of things about it; the art, which is cartoonishly realistic and gruesome when it has to be? it reminds me of junji ito tbh, i think that is an obvious influence on the author's work. and most of the stories genuinely creep me the hell out. the author is quite capable of balancing supernatural horror and more realistic horror too which i really like. i have too many favorites and honestly i think it's for the better if you go into it knowing as little about the stories as possible so if you like horror, i think it would be a fun old time for you.
i don't have any gacha or other game updates to post (i was playing some genshin and had rambly thoughts about it but i haven't been able to play it lately. and idk how often i will continue this but i will try my best to. that's all for now folks!
